Executive Director, Global Head of Patient Engagement- NJ, CA or Remote

Reporting to the VP Global Medical Strategic Operations, this individual will provide strategic leadership to a team of experts responsible for advancing the science of patient engagement to activate and empower patients by employing innovative designs and implementation science methods to improve point of care experiences, patient unmet needs, access to care and patient health outcomes.

This leader will drive engagement across the Patient Engagement Ecosystem (defined as the breadth of stakeholders including but not limited to; patients, providers, care-givers, payers, advocates, organizations, policy makers, industry, researchers, and regulators on a global, regional, and local level across the care continuum that engage, provide care, and advocate for patients and health outcomes meaningful to them) to advance and collaboratively develop interventions to capture and deliver patient-centered care outcomes; gain a deep understanding of patient needs, challenges, preferences and opportunities; co-design digital engagement tools for validation and subsequent implementation at scale; work across the G.Ecosystem team network to integrate key insights on current and evolving patient needs to advance Gilead's life cycle, evidence generation, and commercialization goals across the portfolio; build strong internal and external working relationships across complex networks to ensure Gilead development and commercialization strategies remain patient centric and externally relevant. This individual will work across all therapeutic areas to ensure the successful completion and execution of deliverables and provide strategic, technical and operational leadership to identify and incorporate innovation across industry benchmarks.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
  • Build and lead a diverse and inclusive proactive team of experts to deliver patient engagement excellence for Medical Affairs and Gilead
  • Significantly contribute to the enterprise wide patient engagement movement and culture change management approach across Gilead
  • Lead a cross-functional patient engagement operating model with key functions (Clinical Operations, Regulatory Affairs, Value and Access, Legal, HR, Corporate Strategy, Commercial, Public Affairs, Government Affairs, etc.) to facilitate Gilead patient centricity focus, strategy, and tactics
  • Collaborate with key functions to ensure patient experience data, insights and reported outcomes are systematically captured, collated, shared and applied to Therapeutic Area strategy, planning and activation
  • Significantly contribute to building corresponding infrastructure and capabilities to enable teams across Gilead to activate and embed patient engagement in day-to-day operations and roles across the organization
  • Establish lead relationships with pre-competitive patient engagement organizations to shape external perspectives and bring expertise and insights into the organization
  • Create authentic platforms and opportunities to understand what matters most to patients
  • Enhance organizational understanding of patient behaviors and needs in the real-world setting within and across system-based care experiences to affect patient outcomes
  • Ensure patient insights and needs that are captured are reflective of a diverse patient population and the communities we serve
  • Deliver relevant and actionable insights to inform organizational decisions that address comprehensive care needs
  • Provide a perspective of in practice unmet patient and care needs to prioritize and inform Development decisions
  • Lead, collaborate and co-create coordinated patient experience-based campaigns and initiatives to heighten patient access, (scope including but not limited to reimbursement and patient-centered decision-making drivers)
  • Support and partner with teams to create innovative and/or digital patient solutions, channels and initiatives that increase access to medicines and engagement with patients
  • Develop communication platforms to convey the patient engagement imperative
  • Regularly benchmark Gilead Medical Affairs patient engagement performance and approach
  • Drive innovative projects by identifying opportunities and proposing tailored solutions for internal and external projects within a therapeutic area or above brands to optimize patient outcomes
  • Identify, develop, engage, retain and complete succession planning for direct reports
  • Plan for budget and resources to support Medical Affairs Patient Engagement
  • Develop a long-term strategy and implementation of Medical Affairs Patient Engagement which reflects Gilead' G.Ecosystem network and emerging digital transformation priorities
  • Display strong leadership, expertise, and representation internally as well as externally on matters of critical importance for Medical Affairs Patient Engagement
  • Develop creative and effective solutions to inter- and intra-project priority conflicts, resource constraints and other problems which may impact project or group goals and deliverables across multiple programs.


Knowledge, Experience and Skills:

  • Advanced scientific degree with significant business experience and patient engagement experience
  • 7-10 years global/in-market Pharma/Biopharma experience
  • Experience designing and/or leading collaborative research involving implementation science
  • Oncology experience preferable
  • Experience shaping, developing & successfully implementing global patient-centric plans
  • Experience in strategic planning processes and tools
  • Experience navigating an evolving compliance and regulatory patient engagement landscape with both internal and external partners
  • Experience in understanding of forecasts, budgets, financial processes and tools
  • Experience in an alliance or strategic partnership
  • Experience in translating business needs into a coordinated plan
  • Understanding of digital health arena and evolving role of patient engagement across systems
  • Results-orientation with ability to develop creative and simple solutions to complex problems
  • Strong ability to collaborate across multiple internal and external partners
  • Highly organized with a strong attention to detail, clarity, accuracy and conciseness
  • Uncompromising ethical standard and conduct
  • Able to motivate and foster team & cross functional collaboration
