The Coding Analyst Assistant (CAA) works closely with the Contract Administrator, the liaison between VARIS and health plan Client.  Under minimal supervision, the CAA is tasked with a variety of day-to-day responsibilities to ensure the health plan Client is running at optimal performance.


  • Data
    • Work in conjunction with IT department to assure claims data batches are received and processed correctly.
    • Work in conjunction with IT department and Contract Administrator to assure pre-pay claims data batches are received, processed and selected every business day.
    • Corrects data issues as they arise and as assigned.
    • Works with IT/other departments on system testing as needed.
  • Analysis
    • Assists Contract Administrator in reviewing configuration documents for new health plan implementation – meeting guidelines and requirements for VARIS and Client.
    • Investigates claims with complex pricing and takes steps to resolve discrepancies.
    • Assist Contract Administrator with moving claims through different hold statuses to ensure process completion.
    • Assures that second level appeals are received, processed are accurately handled per the Contract Administrator’s instructions.
    • Assist Contract Administrator with Client/vendor relationships and data management within vendor portals.
  • Invoicing
    • Works with the Contract Administrator to assure that invoicing is accurate.
    • Assists the Contract Administrator with reconciling and posting payments.
  • Reports
    • Generate internal and external reports as directed by the Contract Administrator.
  • General
    • Acts as a back up to Contract Administrator when needed.
    • Performs or assists with special projects as needed.
    • Positively communicates, both verbally and in writing, with all VARIS organizational staff in successfully fulfilling the VARIS mission.
    • Maintains and ensures that protection of patient information with the application of HIPAA standards and individual client contracts and policies.
    • Maintains awareness of and ensures compliance with coding guidelines and conventions, state and federal regulations, client specific policies and VARIS policies and procedures and shares applicable changes with appropriate individuals.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Health plan claims knowledge a plus.
  • Must possess excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Must be very organized, flexible, and multiple task/projects oriented to handle duties assigned.
  • Skilled in focusing on desired results, determining what is important and urgent, clarifying next steps, and delegating effectively to meet deadlines and achieve desired results.
  • Team player a must!
  • Ability to adhere to the highest ethical standards including honesty, integrity, dedication, and leadership.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of ICD-10-CM, PCS and the DRG structure and health care payment methodologies.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in multiple computer applications, especially excel (MS Office), DRG Grouper/Pricer software, and ICD-10 encoder software
  • Must be able to travel as needed.
